What Letter Grade Does SUNY Get?

A Look Into Past Graduation Statistics

Issue date: 5/5/07 Section: Postgraduation
Question: How is SUNY's reputation for graduation?

Answer: It depends on who you ask--but according to most sources, it's doing pretty well.

Each Spring seems to sprout newly born graduates all over the country. A lot like the vegetation, some of them make it and some of them don't. Some don't even get to come out of the ground (until next Spring, maybe).

Every school and every business in the country is open to accusations from the public, such as discrimination, decreases in graduation rates, and so forth. In some cases, the accusations are the unfortunate truth. So, what about SUNY Albany? How are its numbers?

According to John R. Ryan, Chancellor of the State University of New York, "SUNY's six-year graduation rate of 58 percent is 13 percentage points higher above the national average graduation rate of 45 percent for public funded universities, and is also above the rate for national private universities." Not too bad.

One of UAlbany's most attractive traits is its low costs, compared to most major universities. Because of this, more minorities are enrolled in classes than ever in the history of the university. Anyone who walks through the campus can easily see that it is a racially diverse atmosphere. In a 2005 SUNY News article, John R. Ryan was quoted as saying, "SUNY continues to be recognized as a leading provider of high quality, affordable education…record levels of full-time students, new students and minority students indicates increasing access to higher education for New York's citizens."

In this same report, statistics show a 1.5 percent increase of minority students, making the number over 79, 000. This number represents nearly twenty percent of the entire student body.

Another report, "Outcomes for 2000-2004 Statistics and Biostatistics Doctorate Recipients from SUNY Albany", approximates the percentage of graduates within each ethnic group. The following is an excerpt from that report:
